A Guide to Accomodation

Leadmill Point
£91 - £94 per week - 44 weeks
A student's opinion:
"Altogether, Leadmill Point is a great place to live if you’re going to the city campus, as it’s within a 5 minute walk of the main building. It's also conveniently placed near a Sainsbury’s and a laundry service is in the main communal area. The main rooms are spacious and have come with a desk, chair, bed and bedside table for furniture. Most rooms have en suites, however mine does not, and there are two bathrooms shared between 8 people. The Internet connection is adequate, and the flat is always warm even without the heaters. Flat inspections only occur twice a year, so cleaning the main kitchen is usually at the back of peoples priorities who live here. There are some drawbacks however to Leadmill Point. As it is directly next to the Leadmill Night club, it can be noisy on Monday nights and weekends. However I'm used to the noise so this isn’t a problem for me. The staff are very slow witted when dealing with problems. For the past 2 months the boys toilet/shower has had a leak in the ceiling that caused the plaster to fall whilst my flatmate was having a shower! We have complained numerous times and they have done nothing about it. Another time the power for the lights was shut off because of the leaks from the above flat going towards power cables, meaning for 3 days our flat was plunged into darkness with only lamps to see at night. Even though the leak wasn’t fixed, they decided to turn the lights back on. So at any point we can expect a fire or a short circuiting! Also the communal seats are more like plastic sponge chairs that are found at old people’s homes, and kitchen equipment is the cheapest available, meaning there are frequently faults, for instance the door handle fell of our oven meaning we had to wear an oven glove just to open the oven door. Also the walls are paper thin so you can hear everything that happens in your next door neighbours room, from there TV shows to their sex lives.
Even though there are all these issues, the social side of living here is great if you get along with your flatmates, as the communal seating area for the flat has housed many parties, and is a good place to chill and chat with people. If you want to live close to the uni however, I would recommend living at the Trigon, as it is only an extra 2 mins walk from the uni compared to Leadmill Point but everything is brand new in the flat and good quality, and they have a proper social space for the whole accommodation. And they have two fridges between 8 and we only have one! So if you want somewhere to live next year I would put leadmill point down as a second choice rather than first. Even though I say this, I am happy where I live here at leadmill point."

Phoenix Court
£69.87 per week - 42 weeks
A student's opinion:
"On the whole Phoenix Court is not my ideal place to live. The flats have no communal area and there is no common area for people in the building to sit with one another. The bedrooms are draughty and a nightmare to heat up especially with the poor quality storage heaters you get in the room. Considering the fact that there is no communal area then the bedrooms would be bigger to compensate but they aren't so it's a bit cramped and spending all of your time in the bedroom is terrible when your bed is the most uncomfortable thing you've ever lay on. While the flats here are advertised as bills included what they don't tell you is that the electricity for the flat is run through a card meter. You get given so many cards at intervals throughout the year but if you use all of yours before the next lot are due then it costs a fortune to keep the electricity topped up. The fridge freezer is ridiculously small so you can't buy frozen food for more than 3 days because it's actually smaller than an average sized rucksack and the fridge is difficult to stock up when you've only got two small shelves and a draw. This isn't a great building if you're a fan of a good nights sleep there's always people running around the halls and being in the city center you can hear people out in the street. This isn't helped by the fact that the building is also connected to the bar Bungalows and Bears which plays music till around 1 in the morning most nights of the week which can be heard even if you're on the opposite end of the building. The staff on the other hand are the redeeming feature. They're fun to talk to, always friendly and for the most part keep things in check (as much as possible for a building full of drunk students). The laundry room is terrible as over 200 students have to fight over 2 washing machines and 2 driers. so if you've got a lot of laundry to get done you could be waiting a good few hours before you manage to get your first load in (which i have at times). All in all I really don't like living in this building and I can't wait to get out of here and get into a place of my own."

The Marples
£79 - £83 per week - 43 weeks
A student's opinion:
City campus is roughly 5 minutes away, and the staff are pretty nice. The place isn't bad i suppose... it's the cheapest, but not as nice as the others. The showers are amazing though, in my opinion, also it's not ensuite, although it think the top floor might be, I'm not entirely sure though. My kitchen's pretty big and the stairway is like a shitty public flat, although possibly with a few more bloodstains on the walls... The internet's not as shit as it used to be, as they now have wireless, and it's free. I'm not sure if it's just my room, as other people said they've had problems with the taps, but the hot water tap in my room is loose. The laundry machine is pretty cheap too I only spend £1.40 to wash my clothes. There's only one washer and dryer though (between the first and second floor) on the second floor"

Charlotte Court
£91 - £97 per week - 42 weeks
A student's opinion:
"Although the building isn't in the nicest looking area, inside the rooms are modern, clean and look quite nice, except for the curtains. It is about a 20 minute walk to City campus and around 30 minutes to Collegiate. The walls are quite thin so you often hear neighbours through the walls, especially between rooms in the flat, but the noise level all depends on what kind of people you live with. The kitchens are checked regularly by staff and they are quick with fixing any maintenance problems. I've never had a problem with the Internet or heating, usually for me it is always warm in my room, but that varies for floors, buildings and people. Overall it is a nice place to live, but the distance into town is a bit of a pain as you are a bit out of the action. A taxi home from town after midnight costs about £5, which is quite alot if you are on a budget. There is a KFC literally next door and a Netto just down the road. There is also a small Sainsbury's local ten minutes away perfect for the essentials. I personally like living at Charlotte Court and I would suggest it to future students."

The Forge.
http://www.shu.ac.uk/accommodation/residences/forge.html
£94 - £99 per week - 43 weeks
A student's opinion:
"You're never lonely in the forge; it's always buzzing with life and you meet new people nearly every day. This does however mean that at times it can get quite noisy. The reception is almost always open with someone on hand to help, however due to the Internet connection being a separate company it is a pain in the bum if you have a problem with your Internet. The hallway and lift are cleaned every morning but you won't believe how mucky they get by the end of the day. In the winter the rooms are FREEZING. There is a heater, but when it reaches something silly like 27C it goes off and wont come on again for another hour. I'm at city campus and it's less than 30 mins walk away which isn't too bad (however i walk slowly so it can be done probably 20 mins) there are loads of shops nearby; Aldi, Sainsbury's, Wilkinson's, Waitrose, Chinos, Subway, Greggs all under 5 minutes away. The football stadium is close (but you can't hear football games going on). There are a couple of pubs right next to the forge, with a new bar (bar27) opening on the corner of. If i had the choice again i would definitely chose the forge again i love it"
